Shoot 2

Shoot 2

Plans for Shoot

Artist Influence - Ed Ruscha

I have chosen to base this shoot on Ed Ruscha's series of 'twentysix gasoline stations'. Although I will not be focusing on gas stations I would like to use some of Ruscha's ideas and concepts and incorporate them in photos of train stations. The main thing that stands out to me within his work is the wide depth of field that he has used. Ed Ruscha makes sure that he has incorporated the entire gas station within the frame of the image. I think he does this because he wants to give the photo context by showing the surrounding area. I also like the way that the photos are slightly pixelated. I think that this gives the photos a dated look which is something I like when looking at slightly older photos. I think that each of his photos have been taken looking straight onto the gas station, almost as if it is at eye level. I like the use of this camera angle because it is as if the viewer of the photo is there looking at the gas station.

My Best Images

 f/5.6     1/60    ISO 400
I chose this as one of my best images because I liked the contrast between the older architecture of the train station and the modernised parts of the station. I also like the element of symmetry that is in the photo. I feel like the roof of the station has a lot of lines within it and this makes it look slightly  more modern.

 F/5    1/60    ISO 400
I have chosen this as one of my best images because I like the way the business of the train station is shown through the image. I also like the clear contrast of the older architecture and the newly built parts of the building like the shops on the lower floor. I like the way this photo looks over the station and I feel that I have used a wide depth of field effectively.

 F/5.6    1/100    ISO 400
I have chosen this photo as one of my best because I like the juxtaposition within the image of the older architecture and then the modern parts of the station like the chairs and the escalator. I also like the incorporation of the underground signs in the photo because I feel as though this gives the photo context and may make people be able to connect with the photo as they may have been there.

 F/5.6    1/100    ISO 400
I have chosen this as one my best images because I liked the way I have captured the movement of pedestrians within the photo. I also like the way that there are people sitting down within the frame of the photo because I feel like this contrasts peoples busy lives with people who are on their phones and eating who do not have a rushed and busy schedule. One thing that could have been improved with the image above is not using a flash because the people sitting in the foreground of the image look slightly too light.

 F/5.6    1/60   ISO 400
I have chosen this as one of my best images because I like the contrast between the people sitting down and the people rushing around them. I also like the use of symmetry within the image. This is evident with the people sitting on the chairs and also with the escalators in the background of the image. I like the way the background and foreground are in focus because I feel this reflects Ed Ruscha's photos.

 F/5.6    1/80    ISO 400
I have chosen this as one of my best images because I like the incorporation of the train within the photo. I feel like this is different to the photos in my first shoot because they were taken on the tube which have very distinct colours. I like the way this photo links closely to the previous shoot but allows you to see another element of the different types of trains there are at different stations.

F/5    1/60    ISO 400
I have chosen this as one of my best because I like the composition of the image. When taking this photo I was sitting on the stairs and I feel as though this was the reason I was able to capture this angle. I feel as though the handrails on the stairs create leading lines towards the business of the train station.

Images that require improvement

 F/5    1/100    ISO 200
This photo requires improvement because it is under exposed. This is due to using ISO 200 when taking the photo. Although using a higher ISO slightly worsens the quality of the photo sometimes it is necessary to use it. When taking this photo I wanted to try and use a lower ISO however this resulted in the photo being underexposed. I then retook this photo using ISO 400 and it had a better exposure.

F/8    1/100    ISO 400
I have chosen this as a photo that requires improvement because I do not like the composition of this image. When capturing this photo I should have used a tripod because the camera was tilted too much to the right which resulted in the photo being very uneven. I do like the idea of this photo because it is looking at the station from another point of view rather than just from inside but I think that the composition of this photo need improvement. If I were to take this photo again I would use a tripod.

Camera Settings and Equipment

Throughout this shoot I used a canon eos 400d to capture my images. I used a tripod during some of this shoot because I wanted to capture specific compositions like in Ed Ruscha's photos however for some of the photos I took I decided not to use a tripod as I needed to take the photo quite quickly, for example when one of the trains was leaving the station I did not have time to set up the tripod. I used ISO 400 for the majority of the shoot and at one point when I decided to lower this to ISO 200 the images came out too dark. The aperture ranged from f/5 to f/8 during my shoot. Using a low aperture I was able to take photos in slightly lower light settings. I did take some photos outside like the one below* and I used an aperture of f/8. This was because using a lower aperture would have resulted in the photo being over exposed therefore when the lighting environment around me changed I had to change the aperture. Throughout the shoot my shutter speed ranged from 1/60 to 1/100. When completing this shoot I used short shutter speeds because I did not want to capture motion within my photos however I would like to explore this in the future as I feel this could be very interesting.

A03

My main inspiration for this shoot came from Ed Ruscha and the composition and camera techniques he has used. Ed Ruscha photographs use a wide depth of field. I wanted to portray this within my work. I also wanted to look at the idea of taking photos looking directly at the subject of the image. I feel as though this makes the photo look as if you are at the location looking in front of you. I have also taken inspiration from the use of black and white within his work. Ed Ruscha uses quite a soft contrast within his pictures therefore when editing my images I did not want to create a contrast too harsh because I wanted my photos to have a direct link to Ed Ruscha's. There are images that I have looked at in my image bank which gave me a lot of inspiration in relation to taking photos in this specific location. The image located below was taken in Liverpool Street station. I do like the way in which this photo captures movement however this is something that I would like to look at in more depth further into my project. This photo gave me a lot of inspiration to focus on the business of this train station. I was particularly interested by the architecture of this station and after finding out that this was in Liverpool Street I wanted to incorporate this within my project.

Edits

First Experimental Edit

Firstly I altered the images to black and white and adjusted the colour settings. This allowed me to focus on specific colours within the photo and create a harsher contrast in certain areas of the photo.

I then used the curves tool to enhance the contrast even further. I wanted to make the photo slightly darker and the curves tool allowed me to do this.

Second Experimental Edit

In the second experimental edits that I completed I still converted each of the photos to black and white however I enhanced the colour that dominated the photo. This meant that the colour that was most frequent in the photo I enhanced the black and white property to its fullest. This resulted in the photos being slightly pixelated which I liked because I felt as though this made the photos look slightly older and I also feel that this reflected Ed Ruscha's quality of his photos.

This is only subtle however if you compare them to the first edits you ca see the difference and see that the photos are slightly more pixelated and grainy.

Third Experimental Edit

For my third experimental edit I used two photos. One that was slightly closer and more intricate and another that used a wide depth of field. I opened each of the photos in photo shop and then copied and pasted the close up photo onto the other image.
I then lowered the opacity of the photo that I copied and pasted to about 60%. This allowed me to see the photo that was behind. I then used the options which are located to the left of the opacity settings and selected 'dissolve'.

My Final Images

Progression

Progressing onto my next shoot I would like to focus on a station that is not as busy and crowded as larger stations in London. I would also like to look at editing my photos using sections from multiple photos and putting them together.
